CHAPTER SIX

BEFORE

Rain sloshed under my tyres as I sped through the roads that usually terrified me. My knuckles latte-brown on the steering wheel, and my breath making patterns on the driver’s window. The sun low, I pushed the visor to stop the glare which penetrated right to the back of my head. I remember I’d taken special care to match my pink hijab with a floral dress that morning. As if it would make a difference.

Speeding through the numerous traffic lights- why were there so many road works at this time of year? – I tutted when the lights were red, slamming my foot down when amber, eager to get to the hospital so they could tell me that it was all in my head. That what Andrew and I had done hadn’t resulted in something so irrevocable it made me sick.
